I've just added another 1800 miles to the R1200S, touring Scotland this last week, bringing my total since the last major service to 6,000 miles. So I thought it must be due for another service, but it looks like 20,000km (12,000 miles) or 1 year is the service interval.

In previous years, I've stuck to the yearly interval because my mileage has been about 3500, and never considered the mileage interval. Just surprised me it's so high.

Apart from consumables, such as brake pads and tyres which I always keep a check on anyway, is there anything you'd recommend at 6k miles (oil change)?

Trip to Scotland was brilliant - amazing roads - Laxford Bridge to Lairg road is the most fantastic single-track road with passing places. Sounds like a contradiction (single-track and brilliant), but we agreed it was one of the best bits (35 miles approx). Pass of the Cattle to Applecross is worth doing for the view at the top. Will post photos in a day or two.

Possibly belt? I think they're mileage and/or time sensitive

I don't know of any BMW with a 12000 mile service interval.

I will have to check but I thought the 1200s had services at 6000 miles. I certainly would not be letting my final drive oil go any further, in addition oil in the engine and gearbox, plus valve clearances.

All stuff you can do yourself....probably.

The rider's manual distinguishes between a service and an inspection, it seems (wording isn't clear to me). Under BMW Service, it says "After the first 10,000 km and every additional 20,000 km (30,000, 50,000 km, 70,000 km etc) if this distance is covered within a year."

Then under the heading of BMW Inspection, it says "After the first 20,000 km and every additional 20,000 km (40,000, 60,000 km, 80,000 km etc) if this distance is covered within a year."

I shall study this further.

Yes, that's it. The bike requires maintenance every 6000 miles - but this varies between inspection and service .

Brake fluid every 2 years.

I do oil and filter each 5000 kms.

i service mine every 6.000mls (oil, filter etc)

Every 6000 miles Oil & Oil Filter and Air Filter, Bevel Box oil and Gearbox oil.
Every other service (ie every 12000 miles - New Spark Plugs). 24000 miles Fuel filter and Belt at 30k I think

I change the engine oil and filter every year after my last ride of the season so that it sits with clean stuff in there for six months. That's Anything between 3-6k miles. I usually do the gearbox every two years. The final drive was supposed to be 'lifetime' oil which is why there's no entry hole and it's such an ache to get oil in to it. Personally I would now do it every other year along with greasing the splines just because it's all out in the open when one drains the FD oil. Maybe have a look at the valve gaps.

Thanks for those links - As a recent owner of an R1200S, they will come in handy.

I noticed that there was no mention of the final drive oil change frequency - unless I missed it. I thought BMW updated the official service schedule to include it once they realised that lifetime oil was a myth.

It's interesting that UK BMW Motorrad or the dealer network don't make this kind of information available on their websites and we have to go to the US to get it.

I replace oil & filter every 6000mls - gear & diff oil every year
airfilter clean or replace once a year
