Lazy Starter

Post by nickmurph »

Hi All,
My R1100s has been a reluctant starter of recent. The starter motor would turn slowly, pause a bit then spin a bit and everything is good. Perhaps foolishly I changed the old lead acid battery thinking that it had had it's day.

Exactly the same with the new battery....:(

My thoughts have turned to the trusty starter motor (bushes, windings)... before I get the spanners out I just wanted a second opinion. Am I looking in the the right or the wrong place?

If the right place, any tips? I was going to remove the tank and keep going until I found it.

Many Thanks in Advance Nick

The starter cover is held on with 1 screw. You'll need a torx bit. Once the cover is off have a look at the terminals first and make sure it is tight.

To remove the starter is 2 screws, pull it back a bit and it is free. Assembly is the reverse. Note the locating dowel when you assemble.

I have no problem removing it in situ from the bike. To make it easier you can remove the rear wheel for additional clearance to get the screws at the back.

Could be the dreaded cover to the reduction gears in the end of the starter, occasionally shorting out the armature, had the same problem myself & managed to fix it after screwing it up in the first place!!
