I think they mean the shape keeps the acceleration constant as air is sucked into the bellmouth, the idea being to avoid pockets of turbulence.


Here's a straight pipe intake vs an elliptical bellmouth: notice the difference in uniformity of speed (colour) at the exit of the bell.
