Can standard shocks be rebuilt or do you just get new?

Can standard shocks be rebuilt or do you just get new?

Post by bfisher »

Guys,

Just wondering what my options are in replacing shocks on a 11s; is 'replacement' the only option or can you get rebuilds done @ less expense? I suspect i know the answers but want to check as i'm conscious of the costs associated with new replacements.

As a 'newbie' to the 11s i should probably ask the question how do i determine if my bike does need new shocks? I have been informed by a reliable contact who serviced the bike for me that both need some attention, but riding the bike its not terrible (that said, i would know no better either way).

It may be worth visiting a suspension specialist and having them take a look at the shock(s), to ascertain whether they think they're rebuildable. Im guessing the front isn't, but the rear might be.

I previously bought a s/hand RSV Mille shock to go on an Aprilia Falcons I owned, and had that refurbished. New seals, new oil, re-gassed etc. only cost about £75, and was good as new, so we'll worthwhile.

I also went down the route of spending £600-odd quid on a nitron shock for that bike, and it wasn't appreciably better. So refurbishment could be a good option to freshen things up.

Does anyone know if the front shock is actually serviceable? Spoke to MCT & they were not sure re front; a colleague has also indicated he is not sure it is serviceable either. MCT estimate for both shocks (if front can be done) is around £200 + VAT.

I'd be surprised if the front is serviceable, but it may depend on how proactive or helpful the supplier is!!

Failing that, they seem to come up on ebay quite a bit.

If the N2 can be dropped and the seal head (bearing assembly) removed they should be able to service it. I imagine it comes down to seals and parts being available, that's probably the limiting factor, these shocks are getting quite old now.

£200+VAT, wow, that's cheap eh!

If I recall the standard units are from Showa, if anyone would know it would be the guys at K-tech. http://www.k-tech.uk.com/contact.php

Re buying from ebay; my concern here would be i could end up with something no better than what i have now! I am still curious whether my shock is actually no good; a further colleague has indicated the front don't go quickly (i.e. can last up to 80-90k) but obviously that will ultimately depend on how heave its been used..
