Final drive free-play

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to measure the amount of free-play in the final drive? When I come on and off the throttle I have a very definite lurch, almost like you're riding a chain driven bike with knackered cush drive rubbers and to chain too loose. Does that make sense?!
Just wondering if there's a "normal" amount of play, or if it can be adjusted?
Thanks!

The free play is usually the combination of gearbox, driveshaft/uj's , and bevel box. Checking the uj's involves removing the bevel box . I've never rebuilt a bevel box so can't comment on that.
There may not be a problem, if the throttle bodies go out of balance it can amplify the problem you describe.
There does appear to be lot of backlash in the transmission as normal .

Just wondering if this could be a symptom of the gearbox spline thing - a fault I don't know much about, but feel I ought to know more about. I'm obviously worried that if there is a potentially rather serious mechanical issue starting to manifest itself then I need to look in to it further, but I'm a little unsure how I would go about that, without having to dismantle lots of bike... Any thoughts or wisdom?
Thanks!

I would start with getting the rear wheel off the deck. Then simultaneously push pull the wheel at the 12and 6 0clock positions then at the 9 and 3 o clock positions. This will tell you how much play you have and where it is from. It may be the case that it may only require the para lever bearings adjusting. Heat gun and some form of Loctite needed.
