Fuel Range

I don't know if this is good or bad .

My R1100S gets me about 126 miles before the fuel light starts blinking & staying on when braking ....

Is that ok , range wise ?

How far could I expect to go with the light blinking / on before a catastrophic stop occurs ?

That's riding reasonably calmly ( I think  ) on A & B roads around Herefordshire / Forest of Dean area .

Not using any where near full throttle any where ...

I get anything between 110 - 155 miles before refilling. That's refilling on the centre stand and going approx 10 miles with the refuel light on. I,d say the 155 would be the sort of riding you mention.

Hmmm , ok , been refueling on side stand .

Next time I'll top up with centre stand .

I wouldn't have thought that it would be so thirsty , considering it raerly goes about 3500 rpm ...

Maybe I should get it on a dyno & play with K&N air filter ...

Any suggestions who in this neck of the woods knows his stuff with BMs ?

also how much fuel are you putting in? The capacity is 18 litres with a 4 litre reserve in that so anything less than 14 litres means the light may be coming on too early.

Apparently they can be recalibrated as per

18 litres for 126 miles .

Sounds from all the comments here , its correct .

Thanks for all the help as always . :D

31 mpg jeepers somethings not right at all, and unless you have one of the modified tanks you must have been on vapours if you got 18 litres in??

Unless you are hanging on to 3rd/4th and accellerating like a greased ferret on a bungee cord .............

You should get around 10 miles per litre.

The point at which the fuel light comes on - is not a finite point.

Brim the bike on the sidestand, note the mileage. Go for a run of 80miles, and fill up again. Work out the consumption from that.

(that will give you "clock" miles/ltr. If you are interested in true consumption - allow for your speedo being out by around 5%-ish)

Hi Gerry,

Before various mods my 11S was doing 120 - 150 miles to light on permanently. Within about 20 miles of 'permanent on' the light always illuminates when first started, having been resting on the sidestand. Soon goes out though. TBH it's always seemed to do the best mpg when being ridden briskly and making full use of the rev range (e.g. 47mpg during last year's Southwest shindig at Minehead).

I have no centre stand and find that it's a bugger to fill on the sidestand. Due to the design of the filler neck the last bit takes an age - in fact I've never yet had the patience to brim it. I suspect that there's always a 1 or 2 ltr gap at the top.

Why not keep a log of fuel usage vs mileage in order to work out a mean mpg? There's no need to try to brim it each fill, unless maximum range is important to you. As long as you follow the same routine you'll get a reasonably accurate idea. I slosh it in until the auto shut off is triggered and then one extra squirt - every time. You could do worse than use 'fuelly.com' to monitor fuel usage. It's a free application and all the sums are done for you. Do this for 3 or 4 fills and you should have a good idea of what your bike's using.

Incidentally, I once managed 52 miles with the fuel light on - was driving Miss Daisy and sweating mind...

I very rarely get more than 120-130 miles to light on and have had it come on at 90 once but that was caning it on the motorway!!, I have done the holes in the filler neck mod and always fill the bike sitting on it upright. if I fill up as soon as the light comes on I can never get much more than 14-15 litres and fuel is around 38 mpg. I have laser/chip, K&N, lennies pipe and an accelerator thingy fitted which throws more fuel in so maybe on the rich side.

10 miles per litre. 20 miles after light on. 150 miles on a steady run; less if in town.

I'll run it for a while & get some figures together , so I know where I am .

Having run bikes on Km clocks for absolute years & used to getting about 220 before the thing ran onto reserve , remember when you had a little tap & had to turn it 180 degrees , so in my mind 125 m seems a bit low .

But doing the maths .... I guess 200 km is not really that bad .

& yes , I was running it in 3rd 4th quite a bit yesterday , not red lining but giving it a healthy squirt corner to corner .

it concerns me though that you say you get 18 litres in at fill up, cos that's the total listed capacity including reserve ?

Has the bike got a modded tank? there are a few around where did you get the bike?

Maybe the fuel station has a dodgy meter reading ....

Paying for a litre & actually getting 0.9 of a litre ....

I will moniter the fuel carefully over the next few weeks .
