Water based paint

Does anyone know when BMW started using water based paint (engine in particular)
Was just wondering, as I have heard of problems with it.
Apart from a little bubbling on the front engine cover, The engine paint on my 12S looks good and I want to keep it that way, so I'm wondering if the Auto Glym spray on / hose off engine cleaner I've always used on my old bikes is OK.
Does water based paint need to be treated differently when it comes to keeping it looking good and more importantly, stuck to the engine ?
