NOW the future.

At beginning of September I start work on a new job in Trinidad.

Oh dear, how to preserve the bikes?, have to sell the car? ..... lots of stuff to think about.

Trinidad, sounds terrible. Hope you are not expecting sympathy How long are you away? depending length of job would consider selling everything and buying new when you get back with a bag of(tax free?) cash. Or if you are that attached to the bikes you could store them with a specialist company that use temp controlled air bags, we use similar bags for aero engine storage, just have to usual spraying, lubing etc as per a normal winter lay up.

My wife's from Trinidad and we're over there fairly often. Will probably be over for Christmas. If there's any advice you want I'll see if I (we) can help.
There's actually an increasing number of bikes over there - I've noticed this over the last few years, but the roads aren't great for sports bikes (which is what the young lads like, of course) and some of the driving (cars & bikes) is truly terrifying!
How long you over for? I think September is rainy season but that should clear up by December / January.......
That's to make the others feel better - it'll still be 28 deg C even in the rain.
Make a point of getting over to Tobago when you can - less hectic than Trinidad and the beaches are nicer. I'm sure the diving is pretty good too! The flight takes about 20 minutes and they leave every half hour. It's about £30 return (for residents - they might try to charge tourists more!).
There's a ferry also, which takes about 4 hours and isn't a lot cheaper. Handy if you want to take the car though.
Sorry - I've started giving advice and I've not even been asked yet, so I'll shut-up - but seriously, if there is anything you would like help or advice on please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the positive feedback. My wife and I dived in Tobago in 2004 so we are aware that it is a quality destination, especially around Scarborough.

The main memory from that holiday was that my wife had to remove her trousers to get past the passport counter .... she was wearing high heels and posh cropped trousers in a dark green and purple camouflaged pattern which are illegal in T&T.

She changed to a skirt behind a screen, it is the only time in living memory that she entered a country uncoordinated

But people in Tobago gave us bad vibes about Trinidad in relation to the crime and violence, and there is a lot of bad news on the internet.

It is good to hear from someone being more upbeat. I will be in Port of Spain, maybe for three years - four trips home per year, so Mrs A will be coming out for extended visits. Safe accommodation is part of the package, so really the only concern would be just how safe it is day to day if you stay out of the dodgy areas.

I imagine an off road style bike would be best option, it looks like Kawasaki and Harley are the only manufacturers officially represented.

And of course how much prep the BMW and MV will need for long term storage. I do have some vacuum bags with desiccant packs designed for motorcycle preservation.

The Diavels will be in normal winter storage so they can be put back in use quickly when I'm home.
