R1200S...... Engine opinions please

Righto....

I've had boxer twins for years. Recently, I've done 20,000+ miles on a 2005 1200RT, 18,000 on an 07 1200GS, and 5,000 on a 2012 1200R with the newer TC engine. I also owned an 1100BCR for a short while, but didn't do many miles on it.

My thoughts are that the 1100 engine was very under-powered and felt "heavy"; the 05 and 07 1200s were a bit more revvy and powerful, and the later 1200R with the twin cam heads was a loads better engine; more powerful everywhere in the rev range- it made the BCR feel like an underpowered old barge.

So my question is; would a 1200S (standard spec) be more powerful than my old GS/RT ? Would it be as powerful as the newer twin cam engine?

Any other thoughts?

Having owned a 07 GS which I found a bit underpowered, I can tell you categorically that the R 12 S is a different animal all together with as much power, and huge torque as anyone needs on the road. Try one and see.

1200S has more power than any other boxer other than an hp2s, but less real world torque than an r1200r, they can really kick ass on UK roads .
But there is No way im ever going to swap my S for an R.

I would have thought the Hp2s makes the 12s feel like an underpowered old barge. So if its a powerful single seat boxer you want then its a no brainer in my opinion :wink:

No Brainer, only if you have unlimited funds, and a complete disregard for your investment . The gorgeous specification and exotic materials make an HP2S achingly desirable, but then again would you use one in the rain, go touring on it or use it on track days ? I wouldent.
For the real world , where you want a bike that will do everything, an R 12s is spot on.
I think I will just go on a diet and lose a few kgs.

R 12 S 122hp @8250 . 83lb ft @ 6,500 Dry weight 190kg
HP2S 130hp @ 8,750 85lb ft @ 6,000 Dry weight 178kg

If I had the funds at the moment I would be racing a hp2s instead of a r1200s next year. Rain or shine! The hp2s was made for the track.

I would definitely be getting an HP2S, but I can't afford one..... maybe when I'm working again.

I'd use it for trackdays, touring, and scratching about on too....... it's a motorbike, not an investment :roll:

Whatever I get is going to seem a bit behind the door, after my 179hp 'blade. But that's not the point; I don't gel with the 'blade; I prefer big 'n' daft, air-cooled twins :D

However, the BCR wasn't 'enough'.
Think I'll try and find a nice 1200S then.

a bit off the thread but as HP2s were mentioned, there's one for sale in Cooper BMW near Sunderland - under 500 miles for about £11 500 - as you can imagine, with that mileage it's immaculate

I had a Blade also, and one thing I know is that nobody needs that kind of power on any public road. Like you I prefer something with character,looks and plenty of torque.
I know bikes are made to ride, but I guess it depends how much money you have. To someone who scrimped and saved and made sacrifices to buy an HP2S, or any other exotic bike, it would represent far more, than some rich git who owned it as just another toy in the garage.
My Ducati 998S is an investment as far as I'm concerned, it is only ridden 1200 miles a year , never gets wet and lives in the house in the winter. And I know the day I sell it I will easily recoup my purchase price with interest.
I get as much pleasure from it as my R12S which has just done 2,400 miles in the last month alone.

Worth every single penny I am over there this weekend. It may result in unmarriedness as well :wink:

Edit, can not believe I would ever want this bike after dissing it at launch thinking what is the point :oops: I get it now. 8)

I remember well :twisted: You were rating it lower than the RC8, the Duc 848, and even the Honda Valkyrie you used to have......... :wink:

I'd love one, but it would have to be at the expense of the R-1, and I just can't bring myself........... :oops:
