There is a circlular pivot on the outside of the frame, with three radially placed screws, and one central one. I recently discovered the central one was loose and screwed it back in until tight - wouldn't go all the way. What's the story with that then? Just wondering if this is some sort of thrust adjustment on swingarm pivot compression or something??

PS Apologies - new here and asking a lot of questions lately! I'm a Design Engineer, so very curious about how stuff works!

It is an unusual fixture, but only rarely removed.

Those 3 screws and plate hold the fixed (Right side) s/arm pivot pin, which sits inside the taper bearing. And the adjustable end on the left side works against it, so its as well that you nipped up the loose screw.

Be worth checking the s/arm for free movement and no wear, while you're there...if you want to see the exploded parts view try http://realoem.com/bmw/select.do?kind=M&arch=0 on Motorworks website.

That centre bolt is often removed and replaced with a longer one along with the fitting for an ABBA stand, maybe it was returned to std before being sold and not tightened up correctly.

Fantastic link there - that's really useful! It'll be the Filister screw then!! I'm thinking a workshop manual might be in order, so I can check out torques etc for stuff like this (and stop asking so many damn questions!!).

The central screw is just for show.

Does not have any part of holding the bearing.

When you remove the plate the central screw hole is for fitting an extractor

Thanks everyone - will take a closer look later. Due to a puncture I had to remove my rear wheel yesterday, and noticed a small amount of play in the swingarm, so will need to give that a closer inspection before riding again.
