BCR with Laser too loud for a trackday?

Hi all, I've just joined having picked up an 1100S on Saturday (grey and yellow with laser cans, y-piece and chip).

I went up to Snetterton today with a mate on his BCR (same laser/y-piece/chip combination) to get noise tested for a trackday he has there in a couple of weeks. At 5.5k rpm (we thought that was high - we calculated it should be 4.7k) he failed the noise test at 102.6db and the guy said he wouldn't allow him out in an intermediate or advanced group. Bizarrely my bike was 100db and passed - admittedly I think I was just below 5.5k rpm.

My mate's now worried about his trackday he's got planned. Can you get removable baffles for the laser that don't need some big modifications to fit? Had a search but couldn't find anything relevant.

Cheers!

do search on ebay for decibel killer they should do the job :)

or stuff it with wire wool for the inspection, it'll soon burn out after a few laps ;)

Hi and welcome to the forum. Saw your post on another BMW forum. The Lazer exhaust is quiet enough even for Bedford at 101dB. It helps to warm up the exhaust to get everything heated and settled which often helps to get the noise down. So a quick spin down the road for 10 or so minutes is all that is needed. Give Damoace a PM as he is a regular on track with the BCR.

Incidently I was at a track day today at Bedford Autodrome. The standard exhaust is about 97dB @ 5500rpm which is was always tested at but today they tested at 5000rpm which brought it down to 88dB. Fitting the baffle will help a lot too.

If you fancy doing a few more have a look in the days out section where bins and me have advertised a few track days we are going on. If you fancy doing the BMW club track day in August give me a pm with your e-mail address so I can forward to you the entry forms. Believe me the pipe and slipper brigade is absent at such an event and you'll meet plenty of very fast guys. That said they do cater for novices especially and instruction is free. BMW have a their demo bikes there to sample on track. Have fun, the 11S is very good on track, but not made for it.

Thanks for the advice tanneman. We realised afterwards the fact that I only just got my bike up to 5.5 and the BCR actually peaked at just below 6 must have made a big difference.

I'm tempted by an August one actually - I'd definitely be in the novice group having never done any before. I'm booked for a BMW Club day in September at Brands Hatch but might sneak one in before then too if possible. The 11S will certainly be better on the track than I will (and the GS probably would have been too!)

Hello everyone, here I am. I'm the guy with the loud BXC. :)
Thanks to the moderator for manually activating my account!

tanneman I remember talking with you about the trackdays on the other BMW forum.

I'm looking at solutions since I have Snetterton on the 10th booked (and now there is not too much time left) and Brands Hatch on Sept the 24th with metropolis2k as well.

I downloaded the entire noise testing guide. According to their calculations (piston speed 11m/s) the noise test should be checked at 4.700rpm (round to 5k) not 5.5.

Also, it says you should always round the meter reading to the lower number (ie 100.9 is 100).

But I'd rather avoid starting an annoying discussion with the guys, especially because everyone was extremely friendly and I liked that a lot!

So... my ideas are:

a) The cans need re-packing. When I bought the bike it was in the same setup I have it now. Minus Ohlins and Laser chip.
The engine was then running really lean and it backfired a lot. Not good for the "stuffing" in the cans.
I had a similar problem with my previous R1150R and I repacked the exhaust at around 60k kilometers.

Question.
Is there a place in London where I can get them properly repacked (saves time).
Or where can I buy the stuff and I'll do it myself (with metropolis' help)?

b) Baffle.
This is a bit of a pain because the BXC laser exhaust already have some sort of a baffle (ring) inside and it's welded. It also makes drilling the exhaust a bit more difficult and I would like to avoid that.

I did a search on Pelican and these threads came up. A quick cure could be to fit a cat. Also to note is that you'll need the chip for the lazer exhaust or a PC to enrich the mixture.

I'd rather run around the track on feet.

Got it.
After I bought the bike I fitted front and rear Ohlins and the Laser Eprom chip.

Runs crap with an Y piece without the chip. Also very lean, doesn't make for a happy engine on the long run. :)

I think I'll look at repacking both the cans over the next weekend.

Bought a couple of baffles. They should fit... I'll bring my drill to Snetterton  in case I won't pass the test and I'll have to fit them.

If that is on Monday then have a look for a silver 11S with the boxertrix stickers on. We'll have a garage for Oakley MC and you're welcome to join.

Is it you? Sure.

I'm easy to spot. BXC and I'll arrive at the track with panniers on (we're staying Sunday night in a B&B and leaving monday evening) and I'm pretty "big". :P
Black and white Spidi leather suit.

Anyway, I think my italian accent will be a dead giveaway... :D

We'll be staying over as well but more like camping. Sunday we'll be out to enjoy a BBQ with bins at his place.

Yes, he mentioned that in the email.

Got the baffles right now. They don't fit for a millimeter or two
I have to come up with something...
