My first ever bike race I went to. What fantastic racing!

I first started going to the transatlantic races in '78. I can't remember when exactly they started? The mind plays tricks, but I seem to recall pictures in MCN or whatever, of the Americans sticking a leg out? This was possibly around '75 or '76? Not sure.

Nowt new under t sun.

I first started watching racing in `76, first meeting was at cadwell and saw Phil Read and Ago on the MV`s along with Sheene, Grant, Ditchburn, Newbold, Herron etc, the noise and the smell of 2 stroke fumes were amazing, the transatlantic races were originally at Oulton on good friday, mallory park on easter sunday and brands on easter monday. woke up onne year at mallory about 9 0 clock and it still looked dark, opened the tent and everywhere was buried under snow!! those were the days

I think the first Transatlantic was 1973.The first race at Brands was won by Dave Potter on a Norton,the 2nd by Cal Rayburn on a Harley.The Yanks won the series. They raced at Brands on Good Friday,Mallory Sunday then Oulton on Easter Monday. It petered out in the early 80s then I think started again at Donnington about 1986 on four stroke 750cc superbikes.I will be looking out the old programmes to check my facts.Happy days.

My first race meet Proper ( not counting Aintree club races) was also the TA at Oulton park in 76, I have pics somewhere of Barry Ditchburn (who was pissed...literally) and Mick Grant in the Kawasaki Pit, and Barry Sheene also in the Suzuki pit. Everything was so much more accessible in those days and at no extra cost IIRC.

Reg, have to agree about the days, must have killed a few more brain cells than I thought over the years. I have a box of old programmes somewhere, I intended to dig them out after the welsh w/end to see if a certain Jonny 5 featured in any of them but forgot.

Got to say, of the modern-day gladiators, for me, Ian Hutchinson stands head and shoulders above all the rest.

especially at 3:40 where Sheene sticks two fingers at Roberts, I was a major Roberts fan

Such a close finish I can remember screaming at the TV

We were there,never missed a Silverstone GP in those days,Wed to Mon in the caravans,about 8 of us all brewery men,so you can imagine what our diet was like.Great racing,remember Alan Carter leading the 250 race 2 yrs running and falling off right by us both times.He thumped the marshall the second time because he wouldn`t let him restart on his wrecked bike. It nearly always rained on race day.

The second time would have been 1986 as I was there with a group of friends, in fact we could've been yards from you Reg as we were on the corner where he fell off.

We were about 50yds after the bend ,usually under about 20yds of plastic sheet trying to keep dry.The caravan site was not far behind us.
