Having read Haynes and the Motorrad service schedule for the 1200rt (06) there is no mention of any servicing requirement for the final drive. Elsewhere on the net there seems to be postings about servicing the final drive every 20K to 40K or so. No drain hole is provided. I always thought the final drive on these bikes was sealed for life. Any thoughts?

To be honest i think sealed for life is a misnoma[spellin] and mean's sealed for the life of the item with no maintance, i can see no harm in extending the life by giving it a oil change every couple of years even if the final drive is fitted with sealed bearings other parts will benifit from this,
a oil suction gun will be needed to suck out the old oil if no drain is fitted i presume there is a level plug ftted so work from there
on my 1100 i use a hypo 80/90 the same as the gearbox
hope this helps Dai

Ahh yes, youve stumbled across one of BMW's big missives, funny how the drain plug got re-installed around mid 2007. They did the same on the first of the slant K1200 bikes. The service schedule for all other BMW's with the same final drive is 12,000 miles or 2 years, so go figure. I believe the prefered method involves disconnecting the FD and swinging down at the back and using the ABS sensor hole for draining/ refilling, though Im not sure, my 1300 has drain and filler plugs
