Wavy Discs

Post by Neil178 »

Some time soon my discs are coming off to have the wheels painted/powder coated.
I'm thinking about putting wavy ones back on. Purely as bling, no other reason as the present ones are fine and have plenty of life left.
So, information form the masses need please.
Any ones to avoid?
Any ones better than the original?

I have Galfers on my R-1.

When I put on the new wheels, I splashed out a bit and got new discs - going for the Galfers.

Took a good few miles for the discs/pads to bed in, and it's hard to say if there if there is a distinct advantage having them fitted now.

That said - the price of OE discs ain't exactly cheap either.

I have Galfers on my 11S. I got them to replace worn out oe stuff. They seemed to work as well as but no better than the originals. Three years and only 10,000 miles on I'm replacing them with EBC from Motorworks at £94 each.
The Galfers wern't grooved cracked or warped, but they went very blue after a recent track day, and there are some pits in the surface. To be fair I had replaced the worn (8,000 miles) Galfer recommended pads for EBC HH compoud, so perhaps I'm to blame. I talked my way through an MOT, but the tester wasn't happy.
Theres obviously more metal on the EBC discs, so that may or may not help with heat dissipation. They aren't as well finished as the Galfers. There are sharp, slightly burred edges. I guess they are laser cut, but I'm no expert.
I dragged out my old oe discs and they just sort of feel better. Very grooved though, almost a millimetre down in places.
I suppose the oe kit is best value long term. 38,000 on my bike. Or you could try the PFM 6-pot setup that Motorworks are offering; £1K.

Why do cheap bikes never end up that way?

The pitting will happen with most non-asbestos brake pads - caused by putting the bike away wet for longish periods of time (Galvanic action between metal in pads - and disc material).

For long-term storage - pry the pads back, and insert small sheets of plastic (with string tell-tales) between pads/discs.

Thanks for the comments guys. I would keep the originals to one side as there is plenty of life on them. I had pitting on the discs with my K1200RS some years ago, looked like mice were nibbling them! BMW original pads and discs.
From memory, the ones on eBay are Armstrong and I have no idea if they are quality or cack. I'm cautious in case they are poor quality Chinese metal. Anyway, they look the part and that's what I'm after!
I did have the website of an Italian manufacturer saved but a recent update to my laptop deleted it. I think it might have been a Dutch memeber who had them and rated them highly, but it was some years ago now.

Ypu are thinking of Alt disks.
I fitted some "Braking Wave" disks. They looked nice and quite importantly they stopped the bike!

Not too dear either I think.
Can't give long term update as they outlasted the S
