This looks to have happened to mine last night. Driving down m6 and I lost drive, thought it had jumped out of gear, nothing, no matter what gear I selected. Rolled to a stop on the hard shoulder. Strange rumbling from the gearbox. RAC had me home in 45 minutes.

I'll have a look tonight. Is this an economical repair on a slightly ratty r1100s?

I did DIY on my gearbox, all new bearings and seals, not difficult if you know your way around engines/gearboxes. Long winded, single handed, strip down to get to the gearbox, but quite doable. I put in a new clutch and slave cylinder while I was there. Gearbox bearings + seals were about £60. Second hand gearbox, with unknown history, seem to be about £300.

I could not face the time in the garage, I'm replacing the alternator on the fjr this evening.
It's going into http://www.rgm-uk.com/ next week.
I've used him before, he appears to know his stuff, has the kit, and I'll be confident I'll get sorted, and not end up rotting in the garage, as I'll never find the time to look at it.

Do let us know what was wrong and the cost to put it right - will be useful for the next victim.

It's a 2004 twinspark. Only lost a bulb up to now in the 40K I've put on it.

Trawling through the net it seems a common problem. It's half put me off the bike, and I won't be buying another BMW until I'm convinced they can put them together reliably. I can't be bothered changing it at the moment, but if this happens again, I'll get rid.
