Deffo the same glass both sides.

Ignore all the crap about 'special' glass. Bog standard 3mm mirror glass is fine. That is what the originals are.

I couldn't find a source for just the mirror glass anywhere locally, but I did manage to buy a complete right-side mirror on ebay for $76. I needed a left.

I heated them both in the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 degrees Celsius) and very carefully pried the good mirror out of the right assembly - without breaking it, whew. Let it cool to room temperature and installed it in the very hot left assembly. The mirror glass literally dropped into place in the heat expanded plastic.

I can confirm that the left and right mirror glass is indeed identical.

I measured the thickness of the mirror glass. It is 1.8mm thick. There does appear to be ample clearance for thicker glass if that's all you can find.

Hey Pastyman,
Put them in your preheated oven at 140c for 15 minutes or so and youll notice the plastic has expanded and the glass become loose. I then took some plastic cycle tyre removers and (gently mind you) prised at the glass until it jumped out. I was well impressed but wondered if i could have left them in the oven even longer to expand the plastic even more. Anyway there shouldnt be another time and getting them back in should be a lot less worry-heat them up again and press them in. Im going to try shop glass anyway and tape the back up with gaffer tape in case it smashes for any reason and hopefully will sort it, ill let you know. Nice newly painted brackets and mirrors cant wait.

Mark7, thanks for the tip - just tried and it worked great. Ha d my left mirror glass replaced in no time at all.

After surfing fleabay I realized that the glass in the F800ST mirrors is the same as in R11S. Bought several F800ST mirrors for about $25 each, cut one open and removed the glass. Will keep the other one just in case....

the o rings stop the bolts seizing in the captives , [ stops water getting in] they are a pain to drill out.

Thanks for the hints - works on a 2009 R1200GS mirror, had to heat up the oven to over 200C very close to heat elements for over 10 minutes before it would pop in - used Fatties 4.375" round convex mirror replacement. "600%" widened view they claim, reduction of glare at night.

Makes you wonder if there's a dude at BMW heating mirrors in an oven before fitting glass to them....
