Is the wear caused by constant radial expansion and contraction of disc? Or a dissimilar metals thing? .
Mostly explained here ..

Had a quick read through but can't remember any conclusions as to cause? Apart from a comment on shite design, Hee Hee.

Obviously wear, of a type, is the reason. But I wondered whether it is "simply" radial expansion and contraction? I also wondered if road salt is causing a weird corrosion between the two dissimilar metals?

What are the means of prevention? Are there any?

Cheers.

Coses?- bad design, vibration, braking force, heat, expansion/retraction, little play progressing in to big play, due to dirt of a road (grit) getting in between...
Cure?- shims or file and thin washers, maybe coper lube... new wheel...
Yes, vibration is a fair comment. Akin to a fretting corrosion.

The thing expands radially, clearly. But you wouldn't have thought that alone would cause the "erosion" as seen on the pic? The disc flexes really easily.

Someone above said "shite design". I certainly wouldn't be very happy faced with an enormous repair bill, but from another perspective the design looks good. Unsprung weight and gyropsopic (aargh!) issues. And from a purely visual perspective too.

Real world? I'll take the compromise of slightly higher unsprung weight and gyro if I get better longevity, thanks.

So, the bolt passes through the middle and the bobbin traps the washer against the turret surface? Then the disc surface also contacts this extra washer?

What material is it? How does the thickness affect the alignment of disc to caliper? Presumably, if I've guessed all the above correctly, this extra washer would be best installed as early as possible, so as to benefit from a perfectly flat turret surface? Does installation of this extra washer require the turret surfaces to have material machined off?

Interesting stuff. Thanks for reply, and sorry if I'm being a nuisance!

Not sure what the material is , stainless? no machining required imo...
Found these on my vfr Honda... :?
