Stick coil

Post by milleplod »

Evening all.

My 1200ST has developed a bit of a problem!

I parked it up in the garage in November, hooked up to a CTEK charger. I had to use the charger on a car in storage a few weeks ago, so the ST stood 'disconnected' for a while. On starting it last week, the battery was very slow....after a few attempts, it started, albeit running very rough, with popping from the exhaust as I closed the throttle. It eventually seemed to sort itself, although the tickover didn't seem as smooth as previously.

The battery's now fully charged. Yesterday, I decided on a run out, so fired the bike up.....started easily, seemed to tick over fine. As I backpedalled off the drive, it stalled, with no input from me! On restarting, it was coughing and spluttering, but after a bit of revving seemed to clear itself.

On the (short) run, it didn't feel right. On a steady throttle, I could feel a 'small' misfire, the pickup wasn't like it should be....and when I cracked the throttle open, it reached around 4k revs and then there was a misfire (I assume) bad enough to make me think the brakes had self-applied!

Anyway, I rode home....slowly....and started fiddling. With the engine ticking over, I pulled the low-tension feed from each stick coil in turn. The bottom left one had no effect on the running at all, the other 3 were really noticeable when disconnected. So, I'm assuming the one coil has gone.

Do my symptoms fit one coil going kaput? The huge misfire (if that's what it was) surprised me, as I expected the other coil to keep the engine running, albeit not as efficiently as it should.

Any observations anyone?

I have an ST but have not experienced this fault however a friend has a GS which is also a twin spark engine - he found that one of his sticks had gone phut on the lower plug - when he replaced it he relaised that he had been down on power for some time. Your fault could be a combination of a poor battery (not sure if you said whether the battery was old or newish and a non working coil stick) You will need to check all four coils and spark plugs to be sure and give the battery a good charge as well.
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

Thanks for the reply.

The battery's around 2 years old, and I had thought it was OK - but after a couple of weeks not connected to the CTEK, it only just managed to fire the bike up, so perhaps time for a new one anyway. Unfortunately, Odyssey don't do an ST one (as you might already know) as the space available is too small, or I'd go for one of them.

I've just been in the garage and fired it up. Started on the button, ticked over lovely and smooth initially (on 'choke', so a bit faster than usual). When I revved it though, it was popping again through the exhaust as I closed the throttle. When I pulled the bottom left coil, it went rough-sounding again....reconnecting it made no difference, so I'm thinking an intermittent problem.

The replacement coil should be here today, so we'll see if it sorts it!

I would put fresh fuel in it before I started replacing any parts.

The War Departments old GS400 started just fine when I took it out of storage one year, but would not pull it's own weight and would not rev either.

Fresh fuel brought the old girl back to life......wish I could say the same for the War Department!

Cheers

Well, it appears to be sorted. New bottom coil fitted, fired up on the button, ticked over as smoothly as a boxer can......revved it, closed throttle....clean as a whistle, no popping/backfiring at all. Proof of the pudding will be on a run out tomorrow, so my fingers are crossed! :)

Re fuel.....would it go off in such a short period, 3 months?

Good news!

Can't see the fuel going off in 3m - Admittedly my GS1200 wheezed into life after a 6m imprisonment in my garage - but ran smoothly on last year's (pre-price tumble) 95RON

Al :)
If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........

See if that works .....

I've had my bikes standing for that length of time and not had a problem - but that's not to say it can't happen

Just to confirm - had a 70-mile run out today in the glorious weather. The problem's now definitely sorted.....and I'm convinced the bike had been running poorly for some time prior to the coil giving up completely. It now feels just like it did on the day I rode out of Hilltop m/c after the remap - tremendous! I'm a happy bunny.
