painting engine belt cover

OK, who's already done this to their 12 and what did you use and were there any problems along the way. Is anything going to fall out when I remove it? What about gaskets and things (real oem doesn't show one). Any advice gratefully received.

Removed old paint and used hammerite silver and was good till I traded in a year later.

I have found this. I shall do it in situ as well. I thought the cover was taken off but apparently that's fairly major. I think this is the way forward and I too shall junk the foam 'gasket' betwixt the plastic cover and gearcase cover.

I have just "endured" with my 1100s engine, It`s all in the prep, a dremmel with some carbide flapper wheels, brass cup brushes and steel (but be careful to vac everything off) pencil brushes are handy as are the draper picking tools. Rs Bike paints have the specific paint for your bike just go on their model identifier and select, good site fast service and helpful how to sheets come with your order but not inexpensive unfortunately. I am dead chuffed with my results :lol:

I paid £150 for a brand new R1200 front cover, pre-painted.

The cost? it`s a labour of love, and I did all the casings, did not remove the engine cover and have to faff with liquid gaskets when replacing. I have spent about £80 on etch primer, basecoat, lacquer and dremmel bits. £6 on masking tape, 1200 grit felt pads and plastic wall plugs.

I do not want to do this again, but it was a complete front end strip cos I was replacing front head stock anyway, but as you say if it is just a front engine cover and time is of the essence then you have to weigh up new versus old I say. Will post a piccie when I have got it lacquered.

I also did the front wishbone which is a different animal cos it is powder coated so loads of prep on that just to grind off the weld splatter that the manufacturer could not be arsed to do :shock:

I would agree that when one takes into account the paint cost and time involved it may well be 'cheaper' to do that but it's aggro to get that pulley off (I'm guessing it needs a special puller) and I'd have to drain the oil I've just put in as well as new seals.

I bought a newly powder coated front cover from a former trixter, my intention was to get it swapped over next service by the indy guy that I use, however I now have doubts as it has been coated in its entirety, so all mating faces inc bearing etc are coated. A friend has offerd to take it into work and sort it out before it gets fitted, I only paid £60 - ish IIRC so no big issue really and my indy mech reckons on 2 hours labour to fit it so thats another £80 +vat.
I would then get my existing cover (itself a warranty replacement) coated and retained for a few years while I monitor my new one's state.

I wish i was less spanner-shy than I have become, wouldn't have thought twice about sorting it out myself when I was in my teens :roll:

Ryan he with the super moto 12GS from here did the front cover himself, removed it and got it painted, don't think any special tools were needed, I'll try to get him to post up exactly what was involved.

That would be great. I'd rather paint it off the bike. I could stick it in the oven for a while when it's painted too.
