iPhone charging

Post by Motocod »

Hi Folks,

Just wondering what my options are for charging my iPhone on the bike - does the R1100S come with any provision for a 12v outlet?

I've got a phone mount that I bought for my previous bike which came with a U-bracket to fix on to the handlebars. That probably won't be suitable, so I'll also be after some sort of Ram mount type of thing, if anyone has any recommendations.

Incidentally, apologies if this is in the wrong forum section.

Thanks,

Nik

There's an OEM powerlet socket available that fits in the joint between steel rear subframe and the alloy front frame on the left side.

alternatively you can get a power "bank" usb charge device (which is what I use)

It has 5200mah so will recharge the phone frlom flat about 3 times, they're on ebay and are about the size of a packet of cigarettes/

Thanks for that Steve.

Funnily enough, due to the crap battery I've thought about getting a case with an integral (additional) battery - like the Mophie ones. But ideally I want something that will keep it permanently topped up if I'm using GPS on the phone. So on that basis, the socket you sent me the link for looks ideal, thanks!

Just realised I have this socket on the bike:

I'm guessing this is a DIN socket? In which case I could just buy a lead to plug in to that. I believe the previous owner fitted it to keep the battery charged.

Incidentally, please ignore slight traces of dirt, as I do like to keep it clean usually!

yep that's the oem one, often called a powerlet socket you'll need a converter so you can add a std car style charger or USB socket

Don't dismiss the powerbank I mentioned, I have one and it fits into the hein gericke gps bag that holds the phone so means it's a cordless self contained solution :)

I got it after using my phone as a sat nav and the batttery dying on the last few hundred metres of my journey to the south west weekend last year :) ... much to the amusement of the hooligans here :P

I got a plug in car adaptor thing that plugs into a fag lighter socket and gives you 2 x USB and 2 x fag sockets, on a lead.

I've wired this into a switched source with inline fuse and zip tied the little box with sockets to the yoke.

The adaptor was a quid in Poundland...

Good old Poundland!

I think I'll go down the DIN route and get something I can plug in to that, as I've just come from having a hideously unreliable Italian bike, and want to spend my weekends riding, not elbows deep in fairing panels etc...

Thanks for all the replies chaps, really appreciated!

As I said have a look. DIN powered mounts for the I-Phone. Water proof tough case. I use one for my Samsung Galaxy 3 and it does the job.
eg: http://www.ultimate-mobiles.co.uk/mobil ... mounts.htm

Shed loads of products for your mounting options so pick the one you like.

Those stem mounts won't work on an 11S, will they?

Example. There is many more to choose from. Hard wired, DIN powered, bolt mounted, mirror stem mounted, clamp mounts, extended mounts, straps etc... The quick release hard case is secure yet easily removed when I leave the bike. If I change the phone I only have to buy another hard case for it given that the power socket stays the same in which case I just get the little fly lead. The mounting stays the same.

More advise here from or mates across the pond.

Search on here for Telferizer for a fork top ball mount, which is the one I have. Loads of options for powering your iphone at ultimate mobiles, as has already been said.

Thanks for all the replies Gents, really appreciated. I'll take a look through all the links you've sent and see what I can find, in terms of a case that will mount easily on my bike (1100S). I'm wondering if I can find something that'll fit in to the top of the fork leg - if I remove the little knurled stopper out of the top...

Refer to the quote above by Daveg2812. Expect to pay about £16 (well that's what I paid last year).

I have the Iphone4 case similar to the ultimate mobile ones complete with power lead with an on/off button so you don't need to keep unpluging the power socket (which is permanent live BTW).
