Bang! and the drive is gone!

Post by SAS Tom »

Riding to work this morning and half way overtaking a car there's a big bang. Then I can't select any gears. So my thought is clutch has gone and pull over.

So is it the clutch? There's no drive and the clutch makes a grinding noise when you pull it in. You can push the bike in gear fine too with no resistance.

After doing some reading, looks like that is the case. Starting to look expensive!

Well ever since I got the bike I've been expecting it at some point. Got it on 43k and have done 10k myself. Most people have said they last around 40k so I've just been waiting...

Oh dear....I have recently experienced similar on my 99 1100s

42k & bang,rattle,rattle,clutch slip.

Currently being operated on. Almost certainly gearbox input shaft. Bearing/seal collapsed flooding clutch with oil which proceeded to coat rear of bike inc tyre in trans oil. Luckily didnt come off. Undoubtedly done some damage to gearbox also.

New clutch & gearbox replacement together with labour. Looking down the barrel of the thick end of £2k! Deeply depressing! :(

Good luck

Isn't that a case of spending £2,000 on a £2,000 bike?

Seems an expensive way of tackling the problem.

2k seems expensive to me, a recon box is £600 and a clutch is £215. Labour on top will add up to over 1k but no where near 2k.

Mine isn't that severe though, no visible leaks anywhere, just no drive.

The way I see it is that what (Comparable) could I pick up for £2k with a known history? Sure if I was trying to get some resale value out of it then yes I am barking up the wrong tree.
As it is I bought the BM with hopes of longevity & reliability. I am hoping that she will at least return 100k?
Is this wishful thinking? The motor is absolutely sound & I have recently sorted the exhaust.
The reality is that this is my only transport & I have only modest means at my disposal. I wasnt planning on trading up for some while.

Cheers
