Heated grips anyone got these

I havn`t used the HG grips but dare say they will be ok.

the Oxford grips are very good ( possibly the best as far as heat goes, the controler is actually accurate on these and works very well) but are starting to look expensive compared to others.

Daytona heated grips get good reviews
stay away from the symtec heated elements ( these are great if you want to fit under the origional grips and retain the same dimensions, but the output is poor)

With my white fingers I seem to have tried most on various bikes over the years.

..The Oxford ones irrespective of cost would get my vote.

I'll second Oxford grips - and also suggest getting a decent set of black furry muffs - but make sure they're the kind that will screw into the bar ends, to stop them dragging on your levers.

Heated grips + muffs = summer gloves all year round and dry hands even in torrential downpours.

just got a pair advertised ykw from M&P that stated suitable for the R1100S. Should fit them on my days off. They have a cut out for the bar weights.
My bike didn't have the heated grips but a call to Darren at M/W got me all I needed at a good price as most of it was discounted. Might be worth a try?

You can nake your own a few quid spent in Maplins and you can make many pairs if you use my post here you will also need some diamond heatshrink sold for fishing rod handles

and a bit of inginuity[spilin] you will soon becone an expert at making them you will need to fit a switch but i think all bikes came with the wireing and switches fitted you will need either to find wireing from the original loom or fit your own one little tip for the left hand side cover the original grip with foil before you start just to insulate it, the right side will run hotter due to it being insulated from the bars by the twist grip, the .8 ohm less resistance for the left one is important even if you insulate with foil

I will now dissapear off to maplins and come back with a shopping list and better instructions

Scrap Maplins they don't do all the bits needed however Ebay do so here goes your shopping list looks like this

You will also need a waterproof switch and a inline fuse holder and fuse i usually use 10amp but it's not that important as anything is better than nothing

Right let's warm up those cold pinkies we will do the awkward bit first

Cut 2 meteres of your resister wire and cover it with your sleving the fibreglass sleve will make this a lot easier than the pvc type if you have been a cheapskate and bought PVC you will need to cut it into 1' lengths to get it on cover any joins with pvc tape mark this one right

Now repete for the left side you will have to make this side shorter so you have .8ohm less resistance about 6-8" for those without a meter mark this one left

Join about a foot of your extra flexable wire to the ends i solder but you can twist together if thats your fancy heatshrink or tape your connections

Double them over put a few wraps of pvc tape round to keep them together [not together keep them separate but doubled over so the ends are together no you want two seperate pieces but each piece must have two ends at one end and a fold at the other]

Now out to the bike stopping in the kitchen on the way to pinch some tin foil [easyiest done on a sunday when the other half's cooking the dinner as the foil's likely to be out]
Wrap your left grip in foil one or two layers will do secure with tape
Take your doubled up insulated resistor wire place the doubled folded end under the grip outer edge 45ish degree's & tape in place wrap the remaining around the grip with a wrap of tape where you feel you need it one in the centre one at the switch end you need the tails to come out at the front for the neatest install [you did put the left one on the left if not repete getting this bit right]

you need a loop on the right side for throttle movement then cable tie your extra flex wire to the bar's join your extra flex tails together in pairs

Now you should have two ends attatch enough automotive flex to reach a good earth point attatch to earth join enough automotive cable to the other tail and join to your switch now find the position for your switch i find the left side best but it's up to you where you put it, conect the other side of switch to your inline fuse and to a switched live supply. [remember you will posibly need to up the fuse rating of this supply trial and error i'm afraid]

Now cut your diamond heatshrink to length slide over the grips and heat to shrink don't worry if its not perfect they will shrink a bit with use

Now they are finished think of a nice little country pub and go there you won't have cold hands so it will be easy to handle your money when you get there raise a glass to me and spend some of the cash you would have given to oxford or someone else on a nice pint and congratulate yourself for a job well done

Ah ah, now that might explain why my left grip always seems cooler than my right Dai. And I thought it was maybe going 'on the blink'.

Well done Dai! I do like some successful home developed improvements for the bike. An important question though, how much does this system cost delivered? I am now heading back to that superb merlot and the log burner.

I may have enough bits and pieces here to make up a set or two but you will get far more "look what i done points" if you do it yourself!
on a winter run it's no fun having to beat people off your grips everytime you stop bl00dy bikes everywhere four hands on each grip

I don't know but all you need is in the links i put up without going over it all again i would say about £20-£30 but you will be able to do more than one bike if clever enough you would probably be able to do a waistcoat or seat cover even. The resister wire will do many bikes the sleeving you need 4 meters to do one when you think the heatshrink i linked to will outlast the original grips many times over when all set up and fixed you will have heated grips that will last many years made with decent materials the ones you buy will be made to be sold for max profit therefore made from the cheapest materials available in the cheapest place available make your own with decent materials and you have them for the life of the bike on my old trike they were used for 8years and still worked as well the day the trike went as the day they were fitted

For repairs to original grips my left one was not working but the right was i repaired it using two metres of resister wire sleaved with pvc sleave connected to the original wireing and covered with the heatshrink i linked to it works perfectly no hotter or cooler or hotter than the right grip on either setting so to repair the right grip i would think if you went with .8 ohm more resistance than 2 metres you would be about spot on

Nice one Dai! Pete, I fitted these to my Versys and also to my ex's sons bike. they work fine but on both sets the wiring wasn't too good where it entered the control box and eventually failed. I managed to repair it but I do beleive the Oxford grips are better quality
