I've removed the split fork leg and found another crack on the inside ( see pics ) !!!

Post mortem dissection showed that it's caused by corrosion !!

I've never really heard of this before ( in the context of any upside down fork leg ) so I wonder why ?

My R11s has had a reasonably easy life, it's never lived outdoors and certainly during my ownership ( it's 8 yrs now ) hasn't been commuted thru' salty winters or anything like that !!

Made me panic about mine now - will get the bike out and take a look.

It's probably worth a look but it's pretty obviously not a common problem. I'm sure my fork leg was quite a way away from "failing", but on the other hand I wouldn't want to ride it like that .... especially at track day speeds !!!
