MoT QUERY-ish

Postby JamboBoof » Wed Sep 22, 2021 6:19 pm

Hi,
First post...be gentle!

'98 R1100S went for its MoT yesterday. Non-bike specialist garage has an ABBA stand but couldn't figure out how to use it single-sidedly. We did faff around with lifting it on its side stand (no centre one) in order to test the free running and play front and rear. It was sufficient to pass but I'm left wondering just how DO you get the rear lifted? Does the belly pan need to come off for bunging a jack beneath? Can the ABBA stand be used just on one side?

Not all that mechanically full of know-how meself...

Thanks in advance.

I time the oil & filter change with my Bcr's mot. So take it for the mot with the belly pan removed. Kills 2 birds with 1 oil change!
If you leave the bracket for the belly pan on, watch out the mot tester doesn't place the jack under it.....
Never touched it, honest!

ABBA stands need bike specific adaptors and fix to the frame not swing arm like most paddock stands, if the guy didn’t know that I would be wary of what else he doesn’t know!!

The short answer is find another mot testing garage.
For exactly the reasons Al and Gerry mention above.

Old thread I know but I could not resist providing evidence that demonstrates that the ABBA stand can list the rear wheel :D

I once took mine for an MOT and the tester said after trying to bounce the front with the brake on "blimey that's stiff suspension.." facepalm
This was a place that used to be a BMW dealer..
I mentioned this on my last MOT and tester said "yes, I know, but it's on the list of things we need to do.."
It took two of us to manhandle the bike on the side stand so that the tester could spin the wheels..
