Smelly exhaust! Running too rich.

Postby FuzzyEdges » Mon May 17, 2021 12:50 pm

My'02 R1100S has a decat exhaust pipe fitted and the exhaust fumes smell as if it's running very rich!
The plugs don't show signs of the mixture been too rich however.
I'm assuming that the pipe was fitted for more performance but any other tuning work hasn't been completed.

What do I need to do to complete the job and reduce the amount of unburnt fuel I'm pumping into the air?

Thanks.
FE.

With the fast idle open and cold engine it will smell a bit, shouldn’t when it’s hot. Check it hasn’t got a booster plug or other aftermarket add on that kids the ECU it is colder and therefore pumps more fuel in which will smooth the engine out. I had a booster plug on mine and only fitted it in the summer.

Thanks for that. What and where am I looking when identifying a booster plug?

I can’t post pictures on here properly, it plugs in under the front of the seat on the back of the airbox, they come in two lengths, the sensor may be close to where it plugs in or the longer version extends to under the headlight area, hope that helps. http://www.boosterplug.com

Are you sure that isn't lean?

Pops bangs, odd smells and flames can come from being too lean.

Check for anything that can bugger up the mixture, booster plugs, inlet air leaks etc.
