OK, time to come clean over GS tubes / Power Boost plugs ...

I've taken it all off my R11s and much prefer the BM OE setup.

There I've said it.

I've been riding most of the summer with Lennies Ducts, K&N filter and GS stacks , latterly also adding a PowerBoost plug from Motorworks.

Initially I was pleased with the smoothed out bottom end, but was always a bit concerned about the relative lack of top end, adding the Power Boost plug about a month ago just seemed to make matters worse, in fact I had on my setup a big hole in the power ( actual hesitation on acceleration ) at about 6K rpm.

Anyway on returning to near standard setup ( Lennies and K&N staying put ) the bike seems to be running much better overal, including even at lower throttle positions. OK the "surging" feeling is back but just doesn't seem to be as bad as I remembered it.

So the upshot is I'm sticking with it this way and am offering the ducts / power boost plug to anyone who wants to try the mods for themselves.

See For Sale section.

All bikes vary slightly and it may well be that the mods will be more to some peoples liking than mine, so my suggestion is that for the cost of postage or collection any established board member can have the loan of the stuff to test it. If you like the result you can make me an offer if not send it back.

PM me if interested.
Simon.

GS tubes made my engine seem rough and uncomfortable .stock standard set up, only with K & N filter, and she purrs away beautifully . I have given up modifying any vehicle anymore , waste of money firstly, but in doing so, I am presuming that my talent is superior to the machines capabilities. Not so, I''ve had a reality check on that.

I agree Duane, it's fun fiddling about and experimenting, but rarely successful.
I'm sticking to simple things now like gradually replacing all the cruddy posidrive bolts with nice ss ones !!

My Power Commander set up failed about 18 months ago so I pulled it all out. I began its replacement by having Lambda ports fitted to the lower part of both down pipes, all nicely welded in and re-polished. (Spare down pipes.) This was all in preparation to taking it to the well known specialist in Peterborough, who can tune a particular Power Commander so well, each pot is carefully adjusted for optimum performance. Once set, sorted for life.
I then spotted a Techlusion unit on ebay, and tried that first. Cheaper. Techlusion can only add fuel at certain throttle positions. Due to my easy breathing add ons which I thought made it leaner, it took me quite a while to realise via plug readings, the engine was now always running rich. Very rich. So I have pulled out the Techlusion device.
I then rode the second half of my 2k journey in France with whatever the ECU delivered. It was fine. No flat spots, sensible fuel use, accelerated well enough and cruised along nicely.
I will not bother with any further tuning.
For sale: Power Commander requiring attention and Techlusion unit - good working order.

Removing GS tubes !!!!
Philistines !!! Un-believers !!!
LOL.

Well I'm still batting along happily with my GS choob setup, but there were a couple of things I sorted along the way:

- engine vibration/harshness: did the full throttle position sensor and throttle sync (vacuum tube) setup and procedure.

Improved the situation somewhat, but not to my satisfaction. Further digging turned up an air leak around worn RH throttle butterfly spindle bushes. (Common problem by 50,000 km or so).

I repaired these with kit by Dan Cata. Resulted in smoother running once carbs were re-synched etc.

- next, I experimented with different CCP (country code plug) settings. Some gave smoother running than others, as well as slightly different low speed throttle responses.

So between these two, I have a fairly smooth running, frisky engine.

(Since then I've found John Gemi's R-bike chip remapping service. At first blush it seems it's possible to resolve these issues).

Fitted Lennies Induct prior to fitting of GS choobs (+ have purchased his Rocket Sprockets - not yet fitted).

Cheers.
Real torque curves don't have a first derivative. :-^)
