Exhaust system on BCR? And a few more Q’s

Postby Tapio » Thu Jul 25, 2013 7:00 pm

Hi, y’all!

New member here, with a few questions:

1. Bought a (I think) BCR last year. But it’s got the stock r1100s exhaust system. Didn’t bcr’s come with a Lazer system?

2. When BMW upgraded the oilhead to twin spark, they also upped the displacement from 1100 to 1150. So why didn’t the r1100s get the bigger bore like all the other boxers did?
What are the differences between the single spark 1100 and the twin spark 1150, other than the obvious?

3. Has anyone put the bigger cylinders from an 1150 on an 1100? Did a search, but couldn’t find any threads about it.

Hi,
Answers to your questions to the best of my knowledge,
1--Only later BCRs had the Lazer end cans but all retained the cat.
2-- Twin spark was intended to improve low speed running, 1100s was in a higher state of tune than the 1150.
3-- Not a straightforward job--Crankcase needs boring out and then if you use BMW pistons you drop the compression ratio, Specialist pistons all increase the £££/$$$.

Step forward and buy a 1200s if you really want a significant performance boost :D :D

Just to ask another (related) question; rather than swap pistons and barrels, can the complete motors just be swapped, if, say, an 1150 motor was to become available?

The R1100S was never made with the 1150 motor and to the best of my knowledge no other lump will fit
But with a bit of work anything could be done

Just a thought, but doesn't the stock 1150 engine make less power than the 1100, at least in GS form?
This ain't Twitter you know!

2003 R1100S with some bits on.

Yes, tuned for more bottom end, the RT, RS and R versions all are tuned for differing bottom and mid range

But my bike is the last year (2004) they made the BCR. So there are three possible explanations to this:
It never came with the lazer system.
My bike is not a true replica.
A previous owner put the stock system on.

Yes, the 1100 =>1150 conversion is a lot of work and hassle for a measly 45 cc increase.

No! The r1200s is not an option! I think it’s ugly

Tapio, try entering your VIN number here it'll help identify if your bike's a BCR

http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html

I "may" be wrong, but wasn't the option of the Lazer exhaust (and chip) something that the dealers would fit at the first service if the customer wanted it?

Are you sure about this?
I just looked at the engine block, and it’s pressure cast. That mold is not cheap to manufacture so it would be stupid for BMW to make different ones for each model.

Thanks!

Here’s what page said:

Modellbezeichnung: R1100S
Ausführung: Europa
Typschlüssel: 0422
E-Code: 259S
Motor: 2-ZYL - 1,10l (72kW)
Getriebe: manuell
Außenfarbe: PAZIFIKBLAU 2-M/ALPINWS 3 (916)
Produktionsdatum: 27.06.2003
Werk: Berlin

Code Sonderausstattung Optional Equipment
X358A Sondermodell
X385A Bedienungsanleitung Schwedisch
Q425A Sondermodell
X519A Heizgriffe
X547A Sportfederung
X588A Blinkleuchten weiss
X602A Abdeckung Soziussitz
X645A Integral-ABS
X779A Breitreifen

It doesn’t say BCR anywhere, but the color should tell. So if PAZIFIKBLAU 2-M/ALPINWS 3 (916) is PAZIFIKBLAU 2-MIT ALPIN WEISS, and in English:
Pacific blue 2 with alpine white, then it is a true replica

Translated that's

Model Name: R1100S
Version: Europe
Type code: 0422
E-Code: 259S
Engine: 2-CYL - 1.10 l (72kW)
Transmission: manual
Exterior Color: PACIFIC BLUE 2-M/ALPINWS 3 (916)
Production Date: 27.06.2003
Work: Berlin

Code Optional Optional Equipment
X358A special model
X385A manual Swedish
Q425A special model
X519A heated grips
X547A Sport Suspension
X588A white indicators
X602A cover passenger seat
X645A Integral ABS
X779A wide tires

Which is the same as mine, except that yours is Swedish not English export :)

The "Q425A special model", 916 colour scheme (I still think this is two fingers to Ducati with the 11S having underseat pipes), along with sports suspension and "wide tires" denotes a mamola BCR :)

Oh and as far as I'm aware I thought the lazer pipes were OEM on the red white and blue boxercups?

Mine has a full Remus Grand Prix on it that's a little loud
