Poor running when cold !

Postby cillasman » Tue Jun 21, 2016 6:23 pm

Hi all I have an r1200rt 14000k 55 reg, Its been standing for a while, about 2 months and now has a problem, Its starts first go every time but you ride off it cuts out as if its been turn off but restarts goes again then does the same, I removed the plugs and they were all the correct colour, went for a ride 50 miles and all was good. The next time it happened again, It messed about for around 7 miles then ran prefect. The next ride it did the same for around 8 miles then prefect again, 100+ mph stop start around town, faultless, My local BMW dealer was totally useless just quoted me £96pph and far to busy to even look. But thinking about it would the cause be auto choke or similar cold start function as I've said it only does it for around 7/8 miles then runs fine. Ian

You could try some fuel cleaner through the tank

At £96 an hour it might be worth investing in a GS911 diagnostic tool, they do work! It will log the whole ECU outputs with the engine running also with a bit of juggling (mine is a USB connection to the laptop) you can keep it logging as you ride along. Excellent for intermittent but reproducible faults, also for general home servicing.

There are no autochokes on the Bosch motronic system. Only temp sensor(s?) that give cold running fuel enrichment.

So, first thought would be to focus on it (those?). But then again, a faulty temp sensor would have your engine run poorly until it's warmed up. It wouldn't give you those glitches you're having.

Not much help, i'm afraid, but at least_something_: don't look for any cold start systems: there aren't any!

As ridiculous as it may sound, check your battery connections. I've had these symptoms and my earth cable to the battery wasn't tight.
