White or Yellow

Postby McBoxer » Mon Jul 01, 2013 12:35 pm

So I've not been able to do anything to my R11S project due to various issues (house move, building work, new job etc, etc) but have been buying bits here and there as they come up. But now the time is almost here where I might just be able to spend a little time, and a little cash, and actually get to work on the thing.

My paintwork (or rather the bike's) isn't in the best condition, and I was wondering if I should re-paint her in the original mandarin, or go for a colour change - and the one I fancy most is white......

I was actually thinking of an "HP2 homage" type affair - all white bodywork, except for carbon fibre headlamp panel, tank centre and pillion seat cover - with a white bellypan and black (or blue) wheels. Might have to sell the R65 to fund it though....

What does everyone think? I've spent a lot of time in the car world, and there seems to be divided opinions on colour changes, especially when it comes to "classics" (not that I'm saying the 11S is a classic - yet!).

I struggled to find many pictures of white bikes - but the one's I've seen do look good (IMHO). Here's one of my favourites:

Also, what is the considered opinion on painting the frame? Mine has a little corrosion on it. Not sure I want to go down the whole engine out and send it for blasting / powder coating route yet, but if I do should I change the colour? I couldn't find any pictures with different coloured frames so I'm not sure how it would look.

Standard colours make selling on easier quite often, although I do think the R11 suits white. I would have the engine frame and wheels in black/gunmetal though.

Or save a bunch of cash and don't worry :)

I like the white and blue wheels, would look good with the carbon. With all due respect, comparing a standard v special paint in the contaxt of resale value is irrelevant with a bike of that age . Do what makes you happy.

White does suit the R1100S but i feel it needs breaking up a bit either with a design in a contrasting colour (try the same colour as the wheels) or possibly a 10% pearl (again same colour as the wheels) in the lacquer it will show when you get the sun on it but be very subtle at the same time
Or matt black it Dai

The photo you posted looks good but I don't think i'd sell a bike to fund the paint job , I'd leave it mandarin with maybe black wheels , and valve covers and a few carbon bits?

I like that idea - but I'd like to see it on another bike before going this route. It also strikes me as a lot of work!

I like that idea too! Must be my Scottish blood.....

I agree - the bike has done 98000+ miles, so she's hardly a pristine classic. Just thinking of a little bit of cosmetic surgery

I did that once - never again. Those tazers HURT!

I agree that it is a large expanse of colour - those side panels are BIG! I was hoping that the carbon fibre would break it up, though - without the need for anything else

That IS tempting. Would look good in a stealth bomber finish....

You obviously haven't seen my R65!
Seriously though, both need a lot of work and I don't think I have the time or money to do both, so common sense seems to suggest I sell one to fund the other. I think the 11 is the closest to being rideable, and it's the one I have collected most parts for so that's I think where I will concentrate my efforts. But I need to decide if I sell the 65 or lock her away in the garage for future fun!

Think the belly pan goes by the name Ricambi-Weiss.

They are available on Ebay from Germany - don't cost a lot.

Have a search for a thread by Boxerscott where he details the quality and work required to get them to painted condition.
