Best cheap sat nav

Postby dave the german » Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:50 am

Looking for some advice from you knowledgeable fellows - possibly looking for cheap(ish) sat nav that works in Europe for the BMW bash in Garmisch - might just take maps and get delayed (lost) a few times or may consider buying a sat nav - what is cheap (and good)?

Tom Tom app for the i-phone or android driven one. £49 for full Europe cover.

Or you can try ebay.

If you have a smartphone look at

http://www.mireo.hr/en/

I have it on my Blackberry Z10 and it's light years better than the OEM offering, it uses TomTom maps and I got all of Western Europe for about £13

As a separate item you can pick up the little Garmin car units on ebay cheaply enough and store it in the tank bag.

I have a neat little bag fron Hein Gericke that I've attached to a RAM mount on my BCR. Only tried it once and the flaw was the phone ran out of power just as I needed it but have resolved that now with one of these portable power packs that will also fit in the same bag and will power the phone for 4 times longer :)

My K12GT doesn't have the problem as it has a BMW Navigator attached to it, I could use it on the other bikes I guess if I bothered to sort out the brackets but the phone solution works fine for the amount of times I go out of Wales with the 'Cup :)

This is the bag with my N8 fitted as an MP3 player on my KGT

Nav free world for me. Android.

Totally free and uses no data during navigation.

the problem with using Google maps is it downloads the mapping on the fly, and roaming data in Europe would mean an expensive bill, much better to get a program that pre loads the mapping

Try Sygic - available for most operating systems and not expensive. Works well on my android stuff and downloads maps to device so no data charges.

I have used Nuvi 760 and 775's in the past - available for about £40 second hand off ebay (budget about 6 quid for a replacement battery as well - that's why most people sell em, but easy peasy to replace) and stick 'em in tank bag or waterproof GPS case - also available on ebay for about 15 quid.
