Anybody got any experience of riding in Russia ?

Postby kfrogzx7 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 6:34 pm

I'm planning to ride across to St Petersburg in the spring and I'm not finding much information online about what it's like to ride in Russia, if anybody has any tips or info resources I'd be very grateful ?
I'll of course also be traversing Gemany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and possibly Estonia so any tips re those countries would also be interesting.

Eeek! I thought you were fishing for information about www.Russianbrides.com. !

You’d need to ask Boxerscott about that one!

"Safer" countries to ride through might be Germany, Denmark and ferry or road bridges to Sweden, Finland and drop down to St PB. that way.
You're in the "west" for much longer and less time in "cowboy country" that way and on a bike that would seem sensible to me anyway.

Have a look on ukgser site, they have a travel section and some have done what you are considering. You may have to subscribe to get full access, (£12) but might be worth it.

It's a while since I was in Russia and never rode or drove while I was there but the standard of driving is "interesting". Try to learn the Cyrillic alphabet - it will help with some words. I have a Russian road atlas you could borrow. I bought it some years ago but I think it would still be relevant - I can't imagining the roads changing that quick over there. In St Petersburg, after a certain time, the bridges all used to lift so make sure you are on the side of the river you want to be on (otherwise it's a swim across the Neva, and it's deep and wide!!). Be interesting to read about your experiences
