New(ish) R1100S owner checking in.

Good day, fine people.

Well, after wanting one for quite some time (I've previously had an R1200S and that really lit the fuse...) I've just purchased a stunning R1100S.

It joins an R1200R and an Aprilia Falco in my stable of 'bikes that the general public never quite appreciate'.

Anywho, I figured you lot might be a good place to get advice and tips.

My new RS is a mint 2001, yellow and black, with one owner from new and under 20k on the clock.

And the first thing I want to do? Paint her! I don't overly dig the yellow... and I do lust after the Mamola style replicas. So I'm thinking of having it painted, or chasing down some legit bodywork.

Has anyone on here had any experience with having their bike painted? Any recommendations and tips?

If the yellow-painted plastic is based on yellow base material - Will it paint over white - successfully?

Nothing wrong with yellow, mind................ as long as it's not that custardy colour that the R1200s comes in..........

The bike I've just bought from Bikerhoss has a BCR replica paint job done on it, so he may be able to offer some advice on getting it done.

Prior to buying his bike I was having similar thoughts to you on repainting / replacing the bodywork on my old bike, and I found this on e-bay:

He has (or had) all of the bodywork, in white, available and was going to sell it to me for around £300. It's not all listed on ebay, but if you give him a call on 07783442443 he's very helpful. I think his name was Phil, but I could be wrong - I've slept a few times since then!

There's also some BCR bodywork on ebay from another breakers but I believe that set is damaged.

I believe, (after you asking Al, I did a bit of digging) the job on Al's new purchase was done by 'Stan the Man' from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. That boy can work magic with paint, I remember about 20 odd years ago he rescued what I thought was a dead Le Mans fairing I had on a CB900F, It came back (minus cracks & holes!) looking better than new in bright Ferrari Rosso red, He then insisted on matching the tanks paint and I'm telling you it was SO deep you could have gone swimming in it

I digress, The BCR paint is on top of ORANGE, and I'm a believer that if you prep the plastics & prime them right etc, it doesn't really matter what's underneath. But a good paint job does cost plenty ££££££££s

I prefer the red/white/blue, but the red/black/white is pretty too

Unless you can do it yourself, the cost of decent paint is often not worthwhile on an older bike. The rather lovely white/red/black would probably not leave you any change from a grand.

You can save a bunch of cash by prepping the panels yourself, but you would be better served putting the extra into buying one in a colour that you like more, or use it as a fund for suspension and tyres.

Aye, for sure, but everything bar the colour is absolutely perfect. It comes with the original and aftermarket BMW official sports exhaust, seat cover, extra screen, panniers and inner bags - and it's one owner from new.

And if you knew what a steal I'd gotten it for, you'd agree that I'd be better off having it painted twice than buying another one!

Can't see what's wrong with the original colour scheme myself, but then I would say that!
