Tapio: what make the old fluid dirty and black? Is this the process? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_(steel) Regarding brakes, I've come across corroded master cylinder return springs. No, no, , please don't push me that way! I don't know! I do have some experience with fretting corrosion tho...

Tapio: what make the old fluid dirty and black? Anybody's guess is as good as mine. I have no clue. Maybe a previous owner put some fluid in there that really wasn't meant to be used as brake fluid? And it started dissolving O-rings and seals. The brakes work perfectly, though. Now, iron corrosion ...

You should at least check the fluid. Here's a before/after pic on my BCR:

.........On the Mercedes AMG E55 W211 there's a roots compressor sitting between the cylinder banks. On that engine the intake charge is cooled by the radiator water. It tells something about how hot the intake charge is when you use ca 100 deg. C water too cool it! (Here I go again. (Sorry)). What...

I think only the most pretentious people give names to their vehicles......... I call my bike Rocinante! Steve Is that after Don Quixote's horse, or Jim Holden's Corvette Class fast-attack light frigate? I recall the name rocinante from a song by the canadian rock band Rush. Wasn't it in their them...

Now I know we are all different but I have never understood this nonsense of naming bikes (or cars for that matter). It is an it, a thing, an inanimate object, a machine, not a her. And when 'it' does not do what 'it' is supposed to do 'it' is a 'f#cking thing'! Mine are simply called the BCR (or t...

Does your darling have a name?

I wanted a german name for my BCR, that's also known in Sweden. It had to start with a B. She's called Barbara. My Suzuki's called Beata. I bought her 25 years ago, so don't remember where the name came from. The car (E 430) is Frau Müller. The K100 doesn't have a name. She does everything that's as...

Yes, I agree there will be a difference, but the way I see things (at the moment!) it is for a slightly different reason. Not only is a roots (lobe) type "positive" or fixed displacement, it is also a fixed ratio drive. Whereas the turbine supercharger is not a fixed drive and has the was...

..... I agree on the mercs. But i'm sure they contemplated every option available and came to this conclusion for a good reason. AMG knows a thing or two about engines. Losses? I think it's a packing issue. I don't think you can fit an intercooler in there without redoing the whole front of the car.

The design of those mercs is crap to be honest, Why they don't use a separate reservoir is a complete mystery! Water injection also does this and due to the high latent heat of vapourisation gives a greater resistance to knock. Methanol injection does this also but has the added benefit of burning ...

............. Denser air gives a higher MASS of oxygen for each cylinder charge. The MASS of fuel able to be burned efficiently - is proportional to the MASS of oxygen. Al Would I be right to suggest, more specifically still, MASS FLOW? So we increase the mass flow rate by sticking a compressor ups...

Re: Top gear

Just one thing: I can't believe how low the gearing is. In top (6th) I find I'm still looking for another gear, as the revs seem too high when cruising. As it is, one gets up to top in no time, and it seems a waste of a good box since the middle gears are too low to be of much use. At an indicated ...

Re: Cut down socket for gearbox oil drain

Hi All, I don't have the facilities for cutting one down myself, and don't especially feel like paying a dealer to undertake such a basic task! Thanks, Nik As above , I cut down a car drain plug type tool using a hack saw and a vice , if you don't have these facilities I found this link from a bmw ...

Denser by what means? Higher pressure or lower temperature (than the initial state)? Both?

See - here we go again.......

Let's not analyse this to the far end of a fart......... Denser air gives a higher MASS of oxygen for each cylinder charge. The MASS of fuel able to be burned efficiently - is proportional to the MASS of oxygen. Al But you're still thinking naturally aspirated. Turbo engines have a lot of problems,...
